Exploring New Horizons

Changing Jobs Takes Courage

After all we are creatures of habit and we take comfort in structure and things that are familiar. Those who have families to support have a whole different set of circumstances to think about. It isn't only them, but their spouses and children that are involved.

I scared myself recently when I resigned my corporate job to work at home as an executive recruiter. As I was driving home my last day on the job, I remember thinking, "what have I done?" I have no medical, dental, or life insurance, no regular paycheck and nobody to eat lunch with every day. Then I thought, "Yahoo, let freedom ring."

Let's Get Started

Why don't we assume that you want to make a change? How do you go about it? I have provided several helpful articles that you can refer to when planning your new career. My first suggestion is that you should get a professional looking resume. Spend the money if you have to and get it done right. That is your major tool to getting your foot in the door. The cover letter is your second major tool.

Research, Research, Research

For goodness sakes, please do not approach a company you know nothing about. That is the kiss of death. Remember, you are a salesperson and the commodity you are selling is yourself. That includes the total package of appearance, skills, education, experience, your demeanor and your persuasive abilities. Do your homework on the company, their competitors, what they are doing presently, what they plan to do in the future and come up with a good reason for them to hire you.

Think These Policies are Out of the Question?

New Rules For The Office - Effective Immediately!

SICK DAYS: We will no longer accept a doctor statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

SURGERY: Operations are now banned. As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You should not consider removing anything. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a breach of employment.

DRESS CODE: It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your salary,if we see you wearing $350 Prada sneakers & carrying a $600 Gucci bag, we assume you are doing well financially and therefore you do not need a raise.

PERSONAL DAYS: Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturday & Sunday.

VACATION DAYS: All employees will take their vacation at the same time every year. The vacation days are as follows: Jan. 1, July 4 & Dec. 25

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or coworkers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend to the arrangements. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early, provided your share of the work is done enough.

OUT FROM YOUR OWN DEATH: This will be accepted as an excuse. However, we require at least two weeks notice as it is your duty to train your own replacement.

RESTROOM USE: Entirely too much time is being spent in the restroom. In the future, we will follow the practice of going in alphabetical order. For instance, all employees whose names begin with 'A will go from 8 to 8:20, employees whose names begin with 'B' will go from 8:20 to 8:40 and so on. If you're unable to go at your allotted time, it will be necessary to wait until the next day when your turn comes again. In extreme emergencies employees may swap their time with a coworker. Both employees and supervisors must put request in writing to approve this exchange.

LUNCH BREAK: Skinny people get an hour for lunch as they need to eat more so that they can look healthy, normal size people get 30 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure. For those on a diet, 5 minutes for lunch is all the time needed to drink a Slim Fast & take a diet pill.

There are so many books on interviewing and resume preparation that I cannot list all of them here.   However, one book you must get is "96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before you Hire." If you guessed that this is a book for recruiters, you are correct. What better way to prepare for an interview. The author is Paul Falcone. Another good book is "Arco You're Hired!: Secrets to Successful Job Interviews" (Paperback) by Sharon McDonnell. The bottom line is to read these books, get all of the resume and cover letter help you can get and take advantage of the great interviewing resources found on the internet. I buy most of my books at Amazon.com. I have been a customer of Amazon for years and have never had a bad experience. I love their prices even better.
